Organizers behind a movement to keep Columbus Crew SC from leaving are calling on fans to show their support for the soccer club when the team takes on Toronto FC next week.
A cloud of uncertainty over the soccer team staying in Columbus has existed ever since team owner Anthony Precourt expressed interest in moving the team to Austin, Texas. In response to a possible relocation, Save The Crew formed to rally support in keeping the team in Columbus.
The Crew will play Toronto FC in a playoff match Tuesday November 21st at Mapfre Stadium and Morgan Hughes with "Save The Crew" is asking fans to fill every seat inside the stadium to send a message that Columbus supports the soccer team.
"It's important that we continue to show the world just like we've been doing for 23 years that Columbus is the home of not just the first major league soccer team, but soccer in general in America,” said Hughes.
Alex Thomas has been a Crew fan since 2006. He said talk of a possible move has concerned him, but he remains optimistic and said he’ll be at Tuesday’s match.
"I think it's going to be amazing energy. I know that the home crowd is going to bring it,” said Thomas.
Hughes said "Save the Crew" supporters will be present and visible at the playoff game to send a message to Precourt, Major League Soccer and the public.
"Let them know that Columbus is here."
