The 25-year old Columbus Crew SC hasn't won MLS Cup since 2008 when Frankie Hejduk headed in the final goal of a 3-1 win over the New York Red Bulls at the Home Depot Center in Carson, California.
Hejduk was huddled around the MLS Cup trophy Thursday and fielding questions about the surging Eastern Conference Champs from Columbus.
What tells him this group has what it takes to win the MLS Cup in 2020? "The goaltending has been on fire," said Hejduk. "That's a major thing in a number of sports, and Gyasi Zardes is always threatening to score and he's 70-30 every time he 's close."
The Crew made Artur, the goal-scoring hero of the Eastern Conference Final, available to the media along with captain Jonathan Mensah. The Captain was asked how special it would be to essentially close out Mapfre Stadium with a title performance and march that MLS Cup downtown next summer to open new Crew Stadium. "What these fans have done for the franchise and the city has been amazing. They deserve a title for sure."
The Crew SC kicks with the Seattle Sounders at 8:30 pm Saturday in MLS Cup 2020 on FOX-28.
"I just hope this team gets to feel that feeling I had winning the Cup and the fans as well though there won't be that many there," Hejduk added. Hejduk has been the team's Ambassador since his playing career ended.
