The Columbus Crew SC holds its season-opening match Saturday at Mapfre Stadium in a season that almost never happened in Columbus.

This time last year, then-owner Anthony Precourt was trying to take the team to Austin, Texas.

Fans mounted a passionate and eventually successful "Save The Crew" movement, which gained the support of Columbus city leader, and led to the team being sold Cleveland Browns owners Jimmy and Dee Haslam, and the Edwards family.

“The energy in the stadium this weekend is going to be through the roof and that’s what we want," Dr. Pete Edwards said. "We want to have a fan experience that is as good as it can be, and I think that’s what we’re gonna have this weekend.”

The Crew SC plays the New York Red Bulls, which was the team that knocked Columbus from the playoffs last season.

The match begins at 4:30 p.m.

Some tickets are still available through Ticketmaster.

Fans should plan for extra traffic in the area due to the Arnold Kids and Teens Expo that's happening at The Ohio Expo Center this weekend.
