Indiana troopers seize 78 pounds of marijuana during traffic stop

GREENFIELD, IN (WSYX/WTTE) -- A traffic violation turned into an unexpected drug bust for troopers in Indiana, Indiana State Police said.

According to a news release, a trooper pulled over 2017 Ford Expedition for a traffic violation on I-70 near Greenfield -- about 25 miles east of Indianapolis -- around 11 a.m. The trooper later discovered more than 78 pounds of marijuana inside the vehicle.

Offiicials said the black SUV --driven by 51-year-old Christian Elie of Elbert, Colorado -- was weaving outside the traffic lanes. During the traffic stop, the trooper said he deteced an estimated street value of $250,000 of marijuana in the hatch.

Elie and his passenger -- 42-year-old Austin Johnson of Indianapolis were both arrested and transported to the Hancock County Jail on preliminary drug charges.

Officials said it's an ongoing investigation where troopers will work with the Hancock County Prosecutor's Office to determine formal charges.
