COLUMBUS, Ohio (WSYX/WTTE) -- The pool is a great place to beat the Summer heat, but they'll be one less option during the weekend of July 13th and 14th.

The YMCA's Cherry Creek pool will be closed during the weekend of July 13th and 14th because of a national lifeguard shortage.

YMCA officials point out their other pools will remain open this weekend.

Officials explain the national shortage is showing up locally and it appears younger potential employees are seeking other options.

"Less people are working, maybe they're getting involved in school sports, school activities, internships. Getting prepped for jobs that they see more as a career path and not working as much in Summer only jobs such as lifeguarding sometimes," explained Elissa James with the YMCA.

The YMCA points out that they have had success in hiring senior guards and add they train guards for free.

Interested candidates must be at least 16 years old and there are prerequisite courses and test that must be followed and passed.

People interested in opportunities can either go to a YMCA branch or apply online.
