A 40-year-old woman has died after she was shot inside a far east Columbus home Monday night. Investigators say it appears she was shot by someone mishandling a gun.
Jwan Porter was found inside her home on Labelle Drive with a gunshot wound to the chest shortly after 11:00 PM. She was rushed to the hospital, and died about an hour later. Police say an initial investigation found someone, inside the home may have "mishandled a firearm causing it to unintentionally fire". Police now say Eric Lamar Smith-Ross, a visitor of the house, allegedly fired the gun that killed Porter. Smith-Ross was arrested and charged with a separate offense related to her death.
Additional charges against Smith-Ross are pending. Detectives are still investigating the shooting.
