COLUMBUS, Ohio (WSYX/WTTE) - The Ohio State University apparently wants to make sure people remember to use "THE" and has filed a trademark application on the word, a trademark lawyer discovered.

Josh Gerben posted on Twitter that the filing was made Aug. 8, and indicates Ohio State wants it for a line of clothing, including a mock up of a t-shirt and hat in their application.

In a video, Gerben said the application has issues in his opinion, because just putting that word on clothing isn't "sufficient trademark use" and will likely be refused initially.

Ohio State confirmed the report with this statement:

Like other institutions, Ohio State works to vigorously protect the university’s brand and trademarks because these assets hold significant value, which benefits our students and faculty and the broader community by supporting our core academic mission of teaching and research.
