COLUMBUS, Ohio (WSYX/WTTE) -- A person has been hospitalized after a shooting near Downtown Columbus Friday afternoon.
The incident happened at Beatty Park on N. Ohio Avenue in the King-Lincoln Bronzeville neighborhood around 5:20 p.m.
Police officers on the scene said the victim, 16-year-old Shaheed Russell, was taken to Nationwide Children's Hospital in a private vehicle in serious condition. Police said he was attending a memorial vigil when he was shot by an unknown individual.
"We didn't hear yelling or anything, just all of a sudden you hear this pop, pop, pop," said Jade Stephenson who lives across the street from the park. "I see someone shooting over a car. Someone comes running past our house with a gun right in front of my kid. If they have bad aim, he could have gotten hurt. That's all that was on my mind. It was scary. Just thinking about it I'm shaking."
Neighbors said the area around Beatty Park has improved and they feel it's safe there but they said there are still gangs nearby.
"(My children) play right there at that park," Stephenson said. "It is nerve-racking for sure but I can't keep them in a bubble."
Anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to contact Columbus Police Assault Detective Deryl Kowalski at 614-645-4189 or Central Ohio Crime Stoppers at 614-461-TIPS(8477).
