COLUMBUS, Ohio (WSYX/WTTE) -- Columbus police are investigating a 16-year-old's suspected drowning in an apartment complex pool on the city's northeast side.

Police and fire crews responded to the 1800 block of Forest Village Lane at the Central Square Apartments at 5:04 pm.

Batallion Fire Chief Steve Martin said people were performing CPR on the teen when first responders arrived. Columbus police said the victim was taken to St. Ann’s Hospital where he was pronounced dead around 6 p.m.

Detectives weren’t certain if the boy was alone at the pool when it happened. They’re also not certain if he dove or jumped into the water.

Signs posted on the pool gate state there’s no lifeguard on duty, and no one under 18 is allowed unaccompanied in the swimming area.

“I’m shocked to hear that someone passed away, drown in the parking pool” said Central Square resident Caveen Mullings.

Detectives spent the evening at St. Ann’s Hospital in order to get a better understanding of what led up to the tragedy.
