JOHNSTOWN, Ohio (WSYX/WTTE) -- A Licking County township trustee said dozens of discarded American flags were left on a pile of dirt at a Licking County cemetery by accident.

The flags, which were found at Green Hill Cemetery on Johnstown-Alexandria Road, were supposed to be retired by fire, according to Monroe Township Trustee Troy Hendren.

Officials with the cemetery said they should've provided a box instead of leaving them in a pile.

The area VFW said the flags not considered real flags and there is no protocol for retiring them

Hendren said he's taking steps to make sure it doesn't happen in the future.
