A 53-year-old man was killed Monday evening after a car he was riding in struck a utility pole in Scioto County.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol responded to a single vehicle crash on Gallia Pike just before 7 p.m.

Troopers said a 38-year-old woman was driving a maroon 2001 Ford Explorer southbound on Gallia Pike when she drove off the west side of the road and traveled down an embankment, struck a utility pole and overturned.

The woman was taken to Ohio Medical Center and treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

Trooper said a 53-year-old man Timothy Stapleton, of Ironton, Ohio, was not wearing a seatbelt, and was partially ejected and trapped underneath the vehicle.

He was taken airlifted to St. Mary's Hospital where he later died from his injuries.

Authorities believe alcohol was a factor in the crash.

This crash remains under investigation.
