COLUMBUS, Ohio (WSYX/WTTE) -- Shipping giant FedEx says it will hire 1,800 people in Columbus to help with the holiday season.

The company said it's currently hiring for package handlers and other support positions and will continue to add more as needed to help the holidays arrive. A news release from FedEx said the majority of the hires will be as handlers at FedEx Ground facilities, but there'll be other opportunities during the holiday season and throughout the year.

Last year more than one-third of the package handlers hired retained employment with FedEx at the conclusion of the holiday season, the company said.

The company said it plans to hire more than 50,000 people for the holidays nationwide.
